Would like to say hi to everyone, my friend has the above disco (i'm a moto x guy myself but do the spannering) and he uses it only as an offroad toy. has a bodylift and big shoes, auto tranny, but he keeps busting transfer boxes. what I would like help with is as I dont know discos' like bikes, are there any stronger t/boxes that could be fitted, with or without corresponding auto box, that are stronger than the 96 original? any help with this would be greatly recieved and should any of you play with 2 wheels and have any issues, dont hesitate to ask. Thankyou, K.

Hi Kwakman, another biker here. Depending on what size boots he's running, your mate will have increased the overall gearing. This in turn can increase stresses on the whole drive-train especially if he drives hard.

On thing he could consider doing is changing the ratio of the transfer box. Std ratio for his Disco is 1/1.2. If he were to change to a Defender transfer box, they are available in 1:1.4 (Def 90) & 1:1.6 (Def 110).

This would offset the raised gearing effect of the bigger boots and make the vehicle better geared for off-road work.

He's not just being a mechanically insensitive knob is he - because these boxes will take a fair bit of stick?

In view of the vehicle being predominantly off-road, do the transmission oils get changed very regularly? Don't use the normal schedule as that is for on-road and clean conditions??? The fluids can get contaminated by water and stuff which is knackering for the boxes and diffs.

Have you checked that the breathers on the boxes are all clear? If they're not oil will blow past the oil seals.

Good luck

Dave

thanks dave, I know about the gearing but the different t/box ratios were unknown to me, so thanks for that.hes not insensitive, he just can't keep up with my 86 KX500! Much obliged......

Hi mate:

1. I used the wrong word, my english is getting worse, perhaps empathy might be better?

2.So it's all your fault then that he's having to thrash his poor Disco to pieces!!!!:D:D:behindsofa:

told him to buy a v8. he would still have needed to throw a couple of turbos at it if he expects to live with me but he doesn't get 'weather/ferkin cold' issues, first it giveth then they taketh away....

Dave, are the manual and auto transfer boxes interchangeable, or is it auto for auto and manual for manual? Spoke to him an hour ago, he's cracked an axle.......:violent::hysterically_laughi

Think they're the same. It might be worthwhile looking on Ashcroft Tramsmissions website as they've got lots of info about gearboxes and transfer boxes

The actual boxes are the same but I believe the linkages that operates hi-lo and difflock selection are different, so if you swap the transfer box you may need to swap the linkage from your original transfer box to the replacement.

Good luck

Dave
