90 for sale, what do you think

Hi guys
I just spotted this 1984 90 for sale, it looks clean, has low mileage but no MOT for 2 years. What do you guys think? Cheap, not cheap, worth a look?

I fancy a Defender and don't mind getting my hands dirty but want something I can get on the road fairly quickly without spending a fortune (5 or 6 grand) and not really looking to spend the next 2 years working on it.
 
Looks good for the price but you really need to have a poke around its nether regions looking for chassis rot etc and the usual places on the bulkhead.
Definitely worth a look I'd say!
 
Bulkhead has corrosion on passenger side, as yourself what the poor respray is covering. always worth a look and yes you will spend a long time putting it right !
 
I'm guessing it hasn't had an MOT because of rot in the chassis. That's purely a guess but a 1984 Landy will probably need a replacement chassis anyway.
From the photo's the bulkhead doesn't look too horrible but then again a picture can tell a thousand lies. :eek:

Anyone able to hazard a guess as to how much money it would take to get it roadworthy. Assuming it needs a chassis replaced that is.
 
Well chassis is 1800 quid then theres everything else that needs changing whilst you are in there and unexpected stuff you find as well, bet you dont get any change out of 4k and thats with being careful.

Yeah, that's kinda what I thought, to be honest it is more than I want to spend on a car I plan to bash around off road, and I want to be doing it this year. I'm looking at a cheap (£150) Freelander instead and although it will never be as good as a Defender can be, it will get me started. So long as the engine and transmission are OK it could be on the road with new wheels, tyres and lift kit for well under a grand.
A Defender is still my ultimate goal but I need to sort a few things first.
 
That was quick, it was only listed 2 days ago. I thought it would go quick at that price. Ah well, just as well I decided not to go for it. :)
 
The free lander idea sounds good and the ebst bit is when something serious goes wrong or you roll/drown it you can remove your good bits and weight it in and not lose any real money.
Defenders are good but much cheaper to get a disco and apart from the rear overhang will do most things the defender will, they still rot though.

Took my mate at least 6 months to do his chassis swap and he was on it pretty much all the time evenings and weekends, he did ask me whet I would do before he started it, I said break it sell whats left and go and get something you really want that works now and enjoy it, he ignored me rebuilt it with pretty much new everything, if he didnt spend 15k possibly more Im a chinaman, 1 year later he sold it for 4k!

a disco 2 would be your best bet you will get more vehicle for 2k than other models
 
defender to D2 is a world apart in terms of comfort too - D2 much better - BUT, and in my book, this is the killer:- you either need deep pockets, a good independent, ( or both ), and almost certainly diagnostics, which, for nanocomm, means another £450.
Also, In our experience, electronics do not like the climate high in the pennines, and both us and neighbours have serious trouble with them - hence D1's for us

If the off roading bug bites that would be my next step, in the mean time I'm looking for a dog rough Freelander to play with. I've just found one and am going to take a look this afternoon. Freelanders are cheap as chips and not too expensive to keep running if you catch the VCU in time.

i suppose they are and capable , its just the ground clearance issue
