300tdi electrical connector on head

Hi all
Quick question, on a 300tfi what is the electrical connection on top of the head for ? The one by the head bolts , as I’m guessing it’s a temp sensor but I was under the impression the sensor on the thermostat housing does the gauge on the dash ? Am I wrong

Something to do with the egr control module if I remember correctly.
