They only come on with the high beam and they really do light up the country roads.

Why would it? The BECM is unaware of what has been done, the load of the relay is too small to register.

I thought there could be all sorts of hassle with BECM thinking bulbs were blown etc

There are no blown bulbs, just a tiny additional load for the relay, power for the additional lights is direct from the battery via the relay.
