Hi forum, I am scratching my head over a rear end noise and would like some ideas…

My 2003 TD4 started rumbling from the rear around 2 weeks ago, it sounds like a badly worn wheel bearing. The noise increases with speed but does not change when I turn or go either way around a roundabout. It also quietens considerably at bang on 50 mph. It is slightly louder under load.

I put it on axle stands and checked the wheels for bearing rumble or lateral movement, nothing. I checked the carrier bearings on the prop and they had some play so I fitted new ones. The noise was unchanged! A knowledgeable friend insisted it was the diff so today I fitted a good used one and new diff mounts (as these can also cause problems). The noise is still there!

I have had a good look at the viscous coupling (when I changed the carrier bearings) and it looks in good condition. The rear wheel bearings seem fine, the drive shafts seem fine, as far as I can tell the viscous unit is ok and nothing is making contact and rubbing any moving parts.

Any suggestions where I should check next or if I’m missing something obvious? The noise is really loud and driving me mad!

Hi my freelander2 07 makes quite a bit of noise like what you describe took it to indi they took it for a test drive
Said it was tyre noise
General grabbers At2
Changed tyres all quiet now

Does it have the same tyres all round? If not the get 2 that match the least worn and put the new pair on the rear.

If it has identical tyres all round, then make sure the least worn are on the rear.

If the least worn are already on the rear, then swap the back tyres side to side.
