hi all,
First post so please be gentle.
I have a 2002 4.4 petrol vogue.
Drives great when cold, but when it's warmed up the gears go really rough, not all the time and not certain gears.
Having a little nosey I see the oil cooler for the gearbox is a common fault. I have no record of this being done on my car.
I have purchased the part, what else do I need please? I'm also looking for a specialist who knows how to do this as everyone else seems to be scared of it.
I'm in Hinckley, Leics, midlands.
Thanks in advance!
Lloyd :)

Have a look in the technical archive for Saints excellent how to. For what it costs change the thermostat and mounting at the same time and perhaps even consider the rad as well

Thank you!
Do you have the part numbers? Or are they in the technical archive ?

Saint lists all the part no. I used his guide to order everything.
If you can run to it, for real peace of mind, change the rad as well. The bottom rows get clocgged and this is what fouls the oil cooler. Oh, and while you've got it all out, do the lower temp stat mod.

The normal result of the oil overheating is the cooling strategy comes into effect and holds the gears longer to pump more fluid around.
I changed my cooler, stat, mount and pipes, and fluid and filter and torque converter and rebuilt the transmission .....
Not saying yours isn't suffering from too much heat but my first check would be diagnostics and then check the fluid is correct, not burnt and then do the 2 stage filter and fluid change which is also in a write up by the Saint :)
with a bit of luck Bemble will drop by and tell you exactly how to diagnose what is actually happening

thanks for your help.
would you recommend anywhere local to do the work? my local is to shy to take this on, and im not very handy with it all! funds are readily available so whatever it needs / recommendation are more than welcome.
im in hinckley, leics so a localish specialist if possible?
cant wait to get it working so i can fully appreciate the drive!! lol

You could drop Bemble a PM to see if he knows anyone, he rebuilds and sells the transmissions and torque converters so he may know somebody local to you who can do that sort of work but I would be looking to correctly diagnose your faults before spending our money as it's a horrible feeling spending out hundreds of pounds and in my case days of hard labour to find the fault didn't go away. (I removed my transfer box and rebuilt it once for no reason)

Consider changing the cooler pipes too as they can be a sod to remove and damge the quick release couplings.

The gearbox uses the Sport shift map while the engine and gearbox warms up, this has different torque converter lock up maps and shift patterns.....once warmed around 60degC it changes to the normal shift maps.

It could be that the TQ is tired and cahsing grief with the smooth shifting or your fluid is old and no better than water when it gets warm!

First thing would be an oil change to check oil condition and also to affirm correct level.
