Can anyone help?

I have a 2001 Freelander V6 Auto. Intermittently the HDC fault light (orange) comes on and stays on. This happens maybe after a mile or sometimes after 20 miles - not consistent. I have adjusted the throttle cable and all lights are working fine i.e. brake, reverse lights.

I have read that there can be a fault with the HDC selector switch, as this is an auto box its an actual switch as opposed to a lever on the gear stick. Does anyone know how to remove this switch and check as I cannot get the gear gaitor off.

Can anyone help me with this fault and give me a few more things to try. I have MOT due in about 5 weeks time and I reckon this would be a failure as its a warning light.

If not how do I disconnect it as its something I never use. Maybe pull a fuse or something?

Thanks in advance.

I would have thought that HDC isn't a testable item. only ABS, Brakes etc are testable.

ABS system changed in 2001, if you have the later ABS system that the abs light goes out after ignition on rather than the earlier system that you have to drive the car to extinguish the abs light then i would change the brake light switch as it does more than operate the brake lights.

As Pikey said, HDC isn't a testable item, only the brakes are - and most test stations have to use an in car force tester i.e. they drive the car and jump on the brakes and it records the amount of force rather than put it on the rolling brake tester as they just drive themselves out unless its a 4 wheel rolling tester. If the ABS light is on and won't go out they will fail you.

If you can't get it to go out and your that worried about it, either pull the bulb out or wire it into the other HDC light as a temporary measure - it's not a testable item but it will come up on the bulb check so it don't look dodgy.

Hi Chaser,

the ABS light comes on and goes out when you drive a few feet?

How easy is it to replace the barke light switch and where is it located?

Thanks

In that case the brake light switch issue does not apply to the early abs system that you have. Your switch only functions as a normal brake light switch.

When you say 'adjusted the throttle cable' it needs to have quite a bit of free play in it.
