I got a 2ooo model with 85k and did the hg straight away the kit comes with the oil rail so fit it. The threads will be wasted on the original one once you put the new bolts through it then guess what? HGF! while your there do the thermostat mod if you want,if not change the therm while the head is off as a bugger once back together. Water level alarm on expansion tank is a good addition and only pennies. Links can be found by searchin threads! Head shouldn't need a skimbut check compression befor you start, should highlight any further issues. Good luck!

Ok i have got a decent head gasket set sorted, my lad works at a garage and got me a set at a fair price along with a new water pump and stetch bolts but he can not get the uprated oil rail, i have scanned the net and found nothing on these, just seams there is lots of talk about them but no one seams to sell them help please

Land Rover dealers sell them, not sure on the exact price - probably around £40-45. Or Xpart dealers (MG Rover parts supplier)

maximum head warp = .05mm (0.002"). Do not skim unless outside of tolerance or if cylinder liners have worn head as the surface is work hardened.

Exactly:)

I do not understand this obsession with skimming a perfectly good head surface in order to achieve a perfectly good head surface:der:

Hi everyone, i have a disco and my mrs is looking at freelanders and she has been offered a 2000 reg 1.8 petrol freelander with 61k on the clock and only 2 owners from new. Now i have been told different things by alot of people 1 of them being the head gasket going??? any advice on this would be greatly welcomed

Ive got a Y reg 1.8 petrol, 55000 miles on clock, i paid 2700 for it. Its had HG done (prior to me buying it) and touch wood has been fine. It hasnt got many bollocks when it comes to a decent hill but its fine for what i need it for!
