2.5 tdi gearbox

A mate of mine has a 2.5 tdi, it's an early one 1991 "J" reg he has had it looked at by a garage and they say it needs a gearbox (not a transfer box) so can i ask you which types of gearbox(es) fit's please? is it likly to cost a fortune? to have someone fit a secondhand box if that's the case he will sell it for parts etc but i know the car has not had any damage or reliability issues and it has been regularly serviced, it has done 155000 miles so i'm thinking of offering him some cash.
It has 6 months mot and there isn't much rust at all
what do you people think?

That'll be an LT77 gearbox Easy job to change one of ya reasonably au fait with a set of spanners. I've got one lying around doing nowt if he wants it.

If it's a J reg chances are the body will be rotten Have a very good look b4 yu buy it.

i will ask him first then if he's made up his mind to sell i will have a look underneath sills, floors boot and inner wings. Do you know of anywhere else they go rusty

how much is wot ever your time is worth to you
they go rusty where ever there is steel
