1999 1.8 Manual grinding/clunking

Hi guys,

Would appreciate a bit of help with a bit of an issue with my freelander.

its a 1999 manual 1.8lt and the engine runs fine

The problem is I seem to have a clunking/grinding noise coming from somewhere in the engine bay area. The car drives fine - and under load the noise is non existent. Its just when I am coasting in our out of gear. The gearbox changes smoothly and the gearstick does not knock about.

Does this sound like a transfer case problem?

start by checking vcu bearings, then jack up one side,front and rear wheel off the ground and run it up to try and pinpoint the noise, might be a driveshaft, or a wheel bearing.
