Hello all I need some advice or help with my 2001 discovery td5. Yesterday I replaced the clutch. After I started it up and took it for a drive ran fine but seemed to have lost power. This morning I went to start it up and the battery was flat so I put jump leads on it and it wouldn’t start just crank over. So I assumed it was out of fuel so I put 10 liters of fuel in put the jump leads back on after about 10 tries it started but the battery light was on but every time I rev it up the light would go off until I let it tick over then would come back on and the wipers started going slow then I turned off went to start it back up but the battery was dead. I’ve check the battery terminals they are tight. So any help or advice would be grateful thanks

Your heading implies that you know what the problem might be.

Once running have you measured for voltage at the battery? And again with all heavy-draw electrical items on? Should be between 14 and 15 volts.
Low battery power can mean that it will crank over but not start as the ECM needs to see a certain voltage before it will fire the injectors.

Have you charged the batt overnight to see if it will then start? Good first step. Then do the alternator checks, also check the voltage while cranking. Should be about 10 volts or just below.
Battery light DOES imply alternator problem.
Basics, is the belt tight? Tensioner working properly?
Are all alternator connections clean and sound, bolts done up properly, good earth to both engine and eventually battery?
Could be worn or loose brush(es) or rectifier/ regulator pack has a problem.

Loads of stuff on the internet as regards testing and even fixing dodgy alternators.

Outstanding reply there @Stanleysteamer 🥰

Kev 🤣

I’ve checked all connections and there fine I’ve only just purchased my td5 under the bonnet is very muddy and the alternator is covered in mud I’ve tried another good battery same thing the battery light is on while it was ticking over I took battery lead off and it cut out so indicates to me the alternator is nakerd I think I’m right I’m not sure

If the whole flipping thing is covered in mud I'd start by carefully cleaning it all off. Especially the alternator. It might just be an intermittent short circuit orr a bit of mud cloggin a brush.

I agree, I don't think it is the batt either.

I fixed the non start problem it was crank shaft sensor. The bloke. Who I purchased the disco from went to slindon off road track and I drove it home and the clutch went so I replaced that and the crank sensor and it started then this morning I tried to start but battery was flat so I jump started and now the battery light is on and not charging ( just quickly can a bad alternator stop It from reaching max power as it seems under powerd thanks

Forgive me if I am being thick, but do you mean that the non-start problem was down to the Crank position sensor that you fitted?
"so I replaced that and the crank sensor "

Anyway, that is one problem out of the way.
So it is still looking like the alternator? or have I lost the plot?

Well, it would have been nice if he had mentioned the non start was fixed and I could have saved the 15 secs it took me to write my post.

Yh sorry mate I’m probably getting you confused yes I’ve sorted the non start problem (new crank sensor).

I’m going to try and clean the alternator see if it makes a difference if not I think I should replace.

The question I’m asking is can a bad alternator stop the vehicle from reaching max power because at the moment is feels like it’s not pulling strong and takes a long time to build up speed

The short answer is "no".

Take the time to ensure the air filter is clear of poop, but as @Anaconda has said, if this isn't a quick fix it may well mean getting a decent diagnostic.

To get max power there needs to be enough fuel, enough air and the injection needs to to be bang on time. Oh, and the turbo needs to not be knacked as well!
