Discovery 1 - Replacing heater fan

Hi guys,

We have a Discovery Series 1 1990 and the fan for the heaters has seized.
The landy had sat for a few months while some work was being done and the fan was very screechy then, but now it has stopped all together.

I have found a secondhand part and I am going to attempt to fit it myself.
I would really appreciate some advise on fitting this.
I have not really done much work on land rovers before, more Toyota MR2's lol

My girlfriend drives it and is giving me a really hard time.
Its so cold and the windows do not de-mist unless you are doing 60mph, and then it gets nice a toasty, until you stop lol

It's a dash out job unfortunately,and then the heater unit has to be split to get access to the motor.Unless of course you're replacing the complete unit,in which case it's like for like .If you go to all that trouble is it really worth putting in a second hand motor (unknown quantity),only to find it goes down the same road a little while later.I have heard of various motors being used ie VW. as the Disco ones were at one time no longer available .However I do now believe one of the parts advertisers are doing brand new ones but I don't know for how much.

Is it a real pain in the arse to take the dash out then?
Im going to pick out a hainse manual tonight.
Is there any resource on the internet for landrover instructions/manuals?

I can get a second hand heater unit for £125 or just the fan for £55.
The fans new seem to be around £100, you think that may be the best option?

Listen to what your wallet tells you lol

If the whole unit is good, just get that i'd say, if your comfortable to strip it completely, go for the fan

you can buy cd's off ebay thats MUCH better than a haynes manual, cept unless you have a decent printer, a mixture of the two is good. Depends on how well you think you'll be able to manage it. like most jobs lol

I forgot to mention the possibility of the switch being defective.
If you remove it and then put a direct feed from the battery is a means of elimination.
I think that £125 for a second hand complete unit is a bit steep,as also £55 for a s/hand fan .I have seen advertised new Bosche fan units £64 and second hand complete units for considerably less than that.
Either way if the dash has to come out to access the unit what have you got to lose to see exactly what it is that you really need first.I have seen after market heaters that you sit on the dash for around £16 odd,but how effective they are or how much current they draw ?I do not know.
Have you had a look on ebay regarding your heater ?If you decide to take out the dash this weather I hope you have a nice warm garage.Like anything you have do your homework and way up your pros and cons.

Personaly I would get a new (second hand unit) put a new fan in mine a couple of years ago , getting the unit out was easy compared to putting the new fan in.

Reading previous post I had to put a new switch in as well that was burnt out.

Also keep an eye out on ebay they come up often and go for about £20 - £50

Broke one of the vent flaps in the process as well. (still broke now but be buggered if I am taking the heater out to repair it :D

And your sure there is no other way to get that heater unit out without taking the entier dash out?
Maybe cut a bit or get to it from underneath?

I will try the switch first, that would be a relif if it was lol.

If you look on ebay and see a picture of the heater unit size ,then you'll probably realise as to why you have to take out the dash.
I hope the switch solves your problem.
