Turbo problems - is it deid?

In the last week or so the motor seems to have developed yet another problem. Kind of getting fed up with it now to be honest. Anyway. When in 1st and 2nd it seems to be fine, however when I change up to 3rd and try to either speed up on a slip road or climb a hill (pretty much any scenario where the revs will get higher than just general cruising) it will get to a certain point then the turbo seems as if its racing ahead, makes a loud whistle/air rushing noise (just a turbo sound, best way I could describe it) and I don't get any extra power out of it. This happens through 4th and 5th too. I can cruise at 60 in 5th and its fine but if I floored the accelerator rather than it speeding up the turbo sounds as if it spools up and goes nowhere. The vehicle will go faster but it's a very gradual increase.

Btw I don't boot it or drive it like I've hired it, I notice it when driving normally

mine was doing that, turned out to be a pipe that had come loose so it just sounded louder

but check the oil to make sure its not burning any if so you could be in store for a runaway

It not only sounds louder but isn't giving me any extra power and its noticeable. I had a quick check at the hoses earlier and they all seem fine but ill buy new jubilee clips tomorrow anyway.
Absolutely no oil in the intake hose and no excess oil in the intercooler hoses. Oil level has always dropped over time, its leaking from a few different places and the turbo has oil on the bottom but it doesn't seem as if you can replace any seal on it plus it will only leak there when running

you've got boxes of jubilees inside

take turbo off and look for play in it for a start if you're bored

my 300tdi drips a little at the sump but never loses much

They're too small for the intercooler hoses. It's not a loose hose anyway. I hope it is but I doubt it.
Or could a loose or split intercooler hose cause the symptoms?

It sounds like you have an air leak somewhere, I'd look at the hoses again.

split would, loose would.

I lost all power when towing the other day and pulled over to a services. Pipe had slipped off 5mm so it wasn't really noticeable but I could see it had moved when I looked closely at the bottom of the pipe (was the top one to inlet on cooler side)

Only noticed under load, normal driving it was just a little noiser but no real loss in power

Think you would struggle to cruise at 60 if the turbo had gone! Never had one go on my Landy, but have on a Focus estate. It struggled to get over 40!

You won't struggle to make top speed, it will just take time to get there! Whilst checking my intercooler hoses for tightness, I managed to unseat one of mine. The result was a really cool sounding whistling noise accompanied with very poor acceleration.

The hoses are a **** bodge job anyway from whoever did the conversion before me. I'll splash out on some silicone ones and see if that makes a difference. Ta muchly

While you are at it, it might be prudent to give the intercooler the once over and look for leaks or splits in it.

Just had a look at the price of disco conversion kits and they're bloody expensive. Bodge job with new jubilees and some repair tape it will be then. If it is split that is

funnily, mine just started surging yesterday (300tdi). if you hold the revs steady when driving they go up and down and i have a lack of power.

i'm thinking split hose, intercooler, etc. will check this weekend.

wolf as well as the split hoses, check the hose running to the fuel pump from the turbo. just wondering if your turbo pressure is ok, but the fuelling (works via pressure) isn't getting enriched at higher revs.

i'm buying a boost gauge next

A split in the horse makes a noticeable difference to performance and noise. I replaced mine on the previous defender and a difference it made to the general performance. Dave, try the bodge first to prove that's the issue, once you are confident I would definitely upgrade.

I had a look and couldn't see any splits but I've taped the hoses up and replaced the jubilees so will check it out tomorrow

Sounds to me like a split hose/leak somewhere too. Best thing to do is to buy a new set of hoses, eliminate the problem... If they're all old hoses it won't do any harm. I had a similar thing when I first got the 90 - set of silicone hoses, job done! Old hoses has seen better days.
