After 14 years of being insured with those nice people from Direct Line I swapped to Adrian Flux as I wanted a policy that covered off road use and allowed for modifications, what a costly mistake this was.

Having paid for the full year (£270.00) I was told I had 30 days to produce evidence of my no claims discount, so I promptly sent a renewal notice I had from Direct Line, however this wasn't deemed good enough for Adrian Flux, so I contacted Direct line and asked for written proof, in the mean time the 30 days changed with each new person I spoke to with some saying I had just 14 days, all very confusing. In the end I sent Adrian Flux the letter from Direct line which said I had 14 years no claims discount, ah proof at last and everything sorted...or maybe not. Two weeks later Adrian Flux emailed me and asked for a further £28.00 to cover the period that I wasn't able to provide proof of no claims, I argued that they knew of the difficulties I'd had in obtaining the proof and that when it did arrive it retrospecfully proved I was entitled to a no claims discount.

Adrian Flux said they would take the money from the same card I'd used to pay the premium, which I refused to give them permission to do, six days later I received a text message saying they had cancelled my policy.

Now I'm a little old fashioned and I believe the customer (me) should be treated right, especially as I was a new customer, however I was glad not to have anything else to do with Adrian Flux, until that is when I received my refund on the balance of the policy...wait for it....£98.00

This was explained to me by a very unhelpful lady at Adrian Flux as the remaining policy, less the under writers fee, less Adrian Flux's fee (she said they were merely the broker and had the right to take their fee)

So two months motor insurance with Adrian Flux cost £172.00 and they didn't even wear a mask when taking it.

What gets me is that government makes a law that says we have to have motor insurance. I don't have to insure my house, I'm not obliged to buy double glazing from some dodgy door-to-door salesman but I am forced to deal with this bunch of crooks (the motor insurance industry.)

I dare say some will be along to say "I've been with Flux for x years etc, etc" we might even be honoured with some flannel from Flux themselves, but all I will say is anyone who is thinking of going to Adrian Flux...ask them to remove their highwayman's mask first.

sponsors will be happy.:D im with them but they screwed me about a fair bit at first cancelling my policy cos they couldn't see how my landy was garaged on google earth and then refused to pay back 80 quid admin fee saying i had lied about being garaged at night but eventually they got someone who wasn't blind to check and agreed with me that there is indeed a 18 ft square garage on the side of my house and reinstated my policy minus the admin but the initial customer service was crap.

So two months motor insurance with Adrian Flux cost £127.00 and they didn't even wear a mask when taking it.

Hiya,

Please feel free to pm me your policy number and a contact telephone number, so I can look into this for you.

Thanks
Dan

I must admit I had no problems with arranging my insurance, but this doesn't sound good at all.

I will be interested to see how this evolves.

UPDATE TO ORIGINAL POST: My initally premium was £270.00 NOT £225 as stated, so this makes two months insurance with Adrian Flux a staggering £172.00

I am going to make a formal complaint to the financial ombudsman.

I have two issues with the way in which Adrian Flux have conducted their business

1. The time frame for submitting proof of no claims discount was unclear. I received an email on the 2nd November from Adrian Flux
stating I had until a deadline of the 9th November to provide proof of no claims discount otherwise my policy would be cancelled. I
managed after much work to get the proof to them on the 8th November, one whole day before the deadline, however I was then asked
a week later for a further £28.00 You cannot set a deadline and then penalise someone even if they meet that deadline.

2. When I refused to pay the further £28.00 I was not told that this would result in the policy being cancelled, nor was I informed
of the cost involved in Adrian Flux cancelling the policy.

What amazes me is that Adrian Flux has a letter from Direct Line stating I was with them for 14 years, in which time I made no
claims. I paid the premium in full like I always do, I am 44 years of age and I'm fortunate to live in a low risk area, so without
blowing my own trumpet I think I am a good customer, so why did Adrian Flux treat me otherwise.

I am a genuine Land Rover enthusiast and will talk to anybody about Land Rover's, if I can persuade just one person not to use
Adrian Flux then their company will be £200-300 worst off all for trying to extort £28.00 from me.

Now I'm not foolish to believe I can bring the company down, but persuading one person is easy, so why not 10 or 20..

My complaint to the ombudsman will also focus on the hugh cost of so called fees when the policy was cancelled. I asked Adrian Flux last Thursday to detail in writing what these fees were, I was told by customer services that a letter was in the post. I had to call again today and I still have not received any such letter from them explaining how then can justify taking £172.00 from an initial £270 policy after just two months.

Dan, I will PM my details and await your response.

if it makes you all feel better, i am 23, have 4 year no claims with another vehicle, my insurance for my 1988 110 on a seperate policy was... wait for it... £3200.!

Luckerly the good people at swift cover who i insure my 58 plate laguna with (costing a little under £1000) mirrord my no claims and got it down to a little over £1000.

The so called specialist landrover insurance companies.... including adrian flux (£2500) could not compete even with my 4 years no claims put on!

I agree that we are beig robbed blind by inurance companies!

Luckerly i have a good job but have to work for a month to pay a years insurance...
(per vehicle)
How many youngsters can do that in this econamy?

Insurance should be advised but not compulsery... or made alot cheaper!!

No help to your prob but may make you feel better lol

insurance needs to be regulated in this country.. the bastards have free reign on how much they charge. an MOT is a legal requirement, so the government have set prices for it.. tax.. same thing.. how can insurance not be! there should be a standard set basic government supplied policy that is a set price. the bare minimum needed to drive legally, then if you want any extras you pay more..

flux have just made me laugh.. i was looking to swap my car. i had lots of quotes elsewhere for about 1200 for this car.. when i rang them they said an extra £3700! and then they would want to take £600 off me for canceling! i wont be swapping cars!

At times like this, life is grand, more so being "old"
and a lover of landrovers,
motor scooters and such.

the "best" so far for my Disco1 doosel renewal is a whopping £217 fully comp,
yes, i have another car also,
yes, I have a motor scooter also,

but with age comes wisdom.....

Oh,

and much cheaper insurance.......:D

Lucky we aint all holding our breath - huh?

i had trouble gettin my no claims from direct line within the 30 days adrian flux gave me...

i rang them to tel them this and the girl on the phone asked for my policy number with direct line..., put me on hold, rang direct line, then confirmed with me that it was sorted and could she help me with owt else...

i was very impressed, hope you get resolution to the problem m8...

Insurance is a joke !
Especially for younger drivers (under 25)
A quote for my 90 under my dad's name only, fully comp.....between £60-200 with various insurers
stick me on it, 20 years old, 3 years driving, no claims
hmm, that will be £5000...for a car costing half that !

To quote Jeremy Clarkson "So you are saying i'm going to write it off twice a year"

Thankfully managed to get it to £400 with a tracker so not too bad

Adrian Flux lost the proof of no-claims that I sent them and threatened to cancel my policy after 30 days.
That was after sending me an e-mail saying they had all the documentation that they needed, then another one saying they didn't, then another one saying they did, then another one saying they didn't, then another one saying they did...........

Sorted it out by phoning them, but it was a mission!

Wouldnt use them if it was free, everytime i have rung for a quote the attitude of the person on the other end has been shocking. Wont even waste my time now

I cant understand how your insurance works over there. It seems incredible that you would pay up to $5000 to insure a vehicle. To give you an idea my father has 2011 range rover sport and 08 jaguar xk8 and combine for full comprehensive insurance it would total less than 500 pound combined and we still live in a country with very high car theft rates. Only difference is that insurance not compulsory.
Cost on my 110 ranges from 50pound through to around 250pound here in NZ

You don't say how old 'old' you are easye1, I'm 44 and just re-insured my Disco 300tdi for £214, so are you £3.00 younger than me, if so I'd be very upset at being called old! :)

I'd disagree with wisdom coming with age though, I think as you get older you learn by the mistakes you've made, so maybe with age comes the benefit of hindsight not wisdom, after all I know plenty of mad pensioners !!

On a serious note though I think it's scandalous how insurance companies are ripping young drivers off, I feel very sorry for anyone today leaving school/college and starting off in life. Yes statistically young drivers are more likely to have an accident, but they're not all 'joy boys' in hoodies doing donuts in Asda after mid-night (oh how I used to enjoy that back in my youth..)

Insurance companies should introduce a flat rate for new/young drivers that is affordable to everyone which is fixed for two years, and let them prove they are careful drivers then reward them after the two years with a realistic premium, young drivers who collect points or have a claim should be asked to pay more. I'm all for pricing idiots off the road but lets not presume all young drivers are idiots in the first place.

The government really should look into the whole motor insurance industry and stop all these greedy b!"£$rds, thousands of pounds for some young person to insure a car? How can that person then go find maybe their first job, commute to work and start saving for a home?

As Peter Kay would say...kids are the future. Anyone in their twenties reading this..you have my sympathy, it was much easier/cheaper when I was twenty something (and I bet it was for easye1 too ;))

im 20 soon to do my driving licence i though i was being sencible when i brough an old 1982 austin mini did the usual things nice set of weller steel wheels and arches and lowerd it a little for my 10-20mm loweing effort they insurance companies decided that they wanted over 1700 pound (being cheeperst quote) to insure a 1 litre mini so for a laugh i got a quote on a range rover shock it was 2100 pound so i decided to buy a rangerover instead and have a 5 door that is practical and i can use it at week ends to have a laugh
