Had my S3 gearbox rebuilt by a so called expert to solve whining issues. Layshaft and bearings were replaced as well as a 4th and reverse gears. Issue now is that whilst the gearbox is quiet and does not jump out of reverse, the selection between 3rd and 4th is really stiff and 2nd is difficult to find when changing down (although it is easy to find when stationary). 'Expert' has no ideas therefore I need to find help to fix it. Any help would be gratefully received - Roy:)

Simple things first would be the selector mechanism on the top of the gearbox.

Under the round breather , try loosening the cover plate a little and see if shifting improves, if it does you have found the problem, take the cover off and check for rust, liberally grease and tighten checking you still can select

This all needs to be well greased, after this I would ask him what the selector forks looked like when he rebuilt.

There is no 4th gear - its direct drive. Maybe he changed the 3/4 sychro will start off quite stiff but should get better. Try not to rush the changes.
If theres no problems with the selectors then maybe the endfloat for second gear is too tight. Does it grind or just refuse to go into second?

There was no warranty I'm affraid. It was a gearbox garage who put it together for me for cash (say no more) but whilst they tried to sort it we both just ran out of patience!

Anyway, loosened off the top cover a bit and it appears to be a lot better so will spend this afternoon taking it off and investige further - I'll report back.

As above copper slip everything under that top cover including balls and mechs.

I have had a similar issue to this. Box has been reconditioned and cant select 2nd when changing down.
Will it just run in?

I would think so, with no syncho it will be hard to synchonise the gears on a down change. Really you should be double de-clutching on the 3-2 changes but i find the pedal postions in a sereis make this hard so I tend to pull up in 3rd and go into 1st via neutral.

second should be easy to find like first right across to the left against the reverse sprung plate if plates adjusted properly stick went lent against it should drop into second, there are 3 detent springs the tight coil is for reverse the other two are a wider coil, they can take awhile to free up after a rebuild
