wrong detent spring on reverse shafftSimple things first would be the selector mechanism on the top of the gearbox.
Under the round breather , try loosening the cover plate a little and see if shifting improves, if it does you have found the problem, take the cover off and check for rust, liberally grease and tighten checking you still can select
This all needs to be well greased, after this I would ask him what the selector forks looked like when he rebuilt.
i wouldnt gear oil is the lubricant
second should be easy to find like first right across to the left against the reverse sprung plate if plates adjusted properly stick went lent against it should drop into second, there are 3 detent springs the tight coil is for reverse the other two are a wider coil,they can take awhile to free up after a rebuildHad my S3 gearbox rebuilt by a so called expert to solve whining issues. Layshaft and bearings were replaced as well as a 4th and reverse gears. Issue now is that whilst the gearbox is quiet and does not jump out of reverse, the selection between 3rd and 4th is really stiff and 2nd is difficult to find when changing down (although it is easy to find when stationary). 'Expert' has no ideas therefore I need to find help to fix it. Any help would be gratefully received - Roy
