Guys,

Im trying to work out how my seat belts work (don't laugh!)

This is where my belt clip is:

This is where the buckles/mechanism are:

As you can see it looks like I have a two point belt, how the heck do these mount in a rag top? The previous owner looks like he didn't attach one anchor point and just used it as a lap belt, im sure it wont pass the MOT like this..mines a 1978.

I have a roll bar, can I use this to weld a mount etc?

Any advice warmly received or any pics of your set up....im trying to MOT her before my first born arrives in 4 weeks!! ;)

different way round than ive ever seen ,normally normally mechanism bolt on other side near door latch and and buckle between the seats

As James says they look fitted wrong - N/S fitted to O/S etc ...

have a look at others photos, there are loads ...

and some threads on fitting to a rag top ...

Roller end of inertia belts normally fits on tub side of bulkhead behind seats using "L" bracket to orientate it correctly (not enough room between seat box and door to fix it where you would normally see it on modern cars... fixed end is at bottom towards rear of seat box (you will see a depression in the seat box side to allow the bolt head to intrude)... receiver fits to the middle in the channel between channel between rear bulkhead and seat box behind the centre seat/cubby box

There is a raised bar that is supposed to be fitted behind the seats to attach the swivel point to and raise the seat belt above the shoulder, but I have never had one fitted to mine and have always just ran the belt from the top of the bulkhead over my shoulder and this has never been raised as an issue at MOT

Hope that helps?

Seen a made-up bracket like this:

P1010001.jpg

Its got 2 bolts down to the cill, and 2 bolts into the bracket that's bolted on the end of the cill.
It's made from 3mm plate and 25x25x3 angle, with a 25x5 stiffener welded up the edge as well.

There are standard fittings for Series III lap-and-diagonal retractable seat belts.
Refer to pages 2F-16 to 2G-09 in the Series III optional parts catalogue...

thanks for your input chaps-more pics would be fab if you have any of your installs..

am I going to have to buy 3 point belts then? mine only have two fixings..looks like the top swivel bracket is not present in the belts I have?

This is where mine is located (most new belts come with the bracket to do this - e.g. from Paddocks, etc)

Thanks very much for the pic, I think I will mount mine in a similar fashion, but mount the middle mount of my new 3 point belt to half way up the roll cage.
If I drill hole and run some tube through first I shouldnt compromise roll cage strength

will post pics of assembly this weekend.

cheers all.

I asked a similar question on here and I was told that the top mounts must be above shoulder height.

The reason for this is if they are mounted below shoulder height, the force of an impact can pull your shoulder downwards. This can apparently cause serious injury.

That all depends on how high your shoulders are from your ... RRRRRRRRRR ....

Welding a top mount to your roll bar would probably be the easiest and safest way. Happy to measure/take pics of my ex-mod roll bar if that helps.

Have you seen the exmoor trim seatbelt bars? They are expensive but provide an alternative if you can't weld.

I bit the bullet and took roll cage out after work, cut with a hole saw 2.5" up and 14" up.
welded in some thick tube for bolts ( so as to not compromise roll cage strength)
painted whole metal work... quite pleased!!
will fit belts tomorrow after paint dries:

plan to mount retractable in bottom hole, shoulder strap in top hole and then take anchor down to beside seat on the sill.....what do you think?

I'm quite happy so far :)

Looks like a plan that may just work.... Genius - trouble with mine is no roll bar (don't think the standard hoops would be much use.... in fact don't really think seat belts are much use in a rag top without a roll bar but don't expect plod will take that as a decent excuse???
