If this is what the police are going to do ? then surely all the idiots that go climbing ,walking up mountains etc in bad weather should also be fined and charged for their recovery ? or is this a case of 4 x 4 owners being victimised again ,whos goin to be next on the hate hit list ,would of thought theres more important things in the country going on to be moaning about .

Walkers and climbers are usually being rescued from places they are entitled to be......he had no right to be driving in the woods he was driving in, and quite honestly got what he deserved, in fact, he got off lightly.

The forestry commission should at least facilitate more for those who wish to explore the countryside by means of 4x4. They allow mountain bikers and horse riders to use the their lanes/tracks & trails, but not 4x4s, even though they have miles and miles of lanes/tracks & trails. As it is public land, we should have the right to explore and enjoy much more of the countryside, irrespective of our means of transport. Imo, it seems that much of it is very closed off and restricted, even though it is public land. I'm not suggesting for one minute that they should open it all up for motor vehicles, but there's little reason why most of the lanes need to be restricted. After all, if 4x4s were allowed to drive on them, it would prevent them from becoming overgrown with vegetation and in that respect, it would be benefiting the environment.
The fact is simple, if people had more places to drive their 4x4's, they wouldn't need to get up to mischief by doing things like this. I know that's no excuse for this sort of behaviour, but it is one way of tackling the problem.

forestry commission look after a couple of greenlanes near me, they keep them in good condition, driveable all year round
