Wondering if any HAMs are here with mobile rigs in their Landys....and I dont mean meat :rolleyes:

Maybe I chatted with some of you and never knew it. Will be installing an HF rig in the Landy when its done and hope to rag chew with some of you when mobile.

Seems though there are a number of HAMies on LZ. I will ask all HAMs to collectively have our Callsigns and locations added to this opening post. We can help both CBers and HAMies on this thread too.

Would be nice for you guys to add pics of your set up to this thread also.

122,707 members......I concede there may be others ;)

Pikey had his rigged up in his 110 but it's stripped out atm ready for a chassis swap.

Wow thats alot, maybe 3/4 active though..still a huge number. Pikey might have a base set up too, should see if I can catch him on the air. Thanks BB for letting me know.

Hmmm. That fred went well ....

I don't think there are too many mobile HF rigs or users about these days, not like it used to be.
The last time I had any installed mobile kit was way back in the 70s when I had a 2 metre Pye Vanguard (AM25T) in a Mk1 Ford Transit.
I don't have any fixed kit these days but I do have a couple of the 2 metre channels set up in a portable and a mag-mount for 2m/70cm.

Thats too bad, Brian, would have thought its still popular as in North America. in 2012 the AARL in the US said they have had the highest HAM license students who passed their exams and applications ever in their history of HAM radio.

Would have been nice to hit you guys on the air from here. If you will be using a 2meter rig, you can still make contact when I install my Echo Link repeater here.

This is my current HAM shack in Barbados QTH. I am running a Flex Software Defined 6500 Radio with a 43ft vertical antenna covering 80-6 meters. 160 is covered with home brewed inverted V with fiber glass stand off, plexi glass main and tie off isolators.

I also have an oldie classic Icom IC-761 in new condition, my first HF rig. Have a Yeasu FT-2000 with mods. Flex 6500 FlexRadio Systems - FLEX-6500

UPDATE: I just installed a 7 Band Hex Beam made in Wales, covering 6, 10, 12, 15, 17, 20 and 40 Meters. Rotor is a brand new Yeasu G800-DXA with memory. Its rated at 17 sq ft wind loading but my antenna is below 5 sq ft, again its good for storms and if I need to operate in case of emergency.

I built my own 24 ft push up mast, but will replace that with a 35 ft crank up tower, however, my Barbados QTH does not have a height issue.
I am 300ft above sea level atop a hill and have a clear shot across the ocean to Europe, North America and Asia at 12 ft, the crank up tower is handy when we are expecting tropical storms.

Typical question about folks who do not know what HAMMies are about :D

Bob, HF (High Frequency) radio was one the first methods of wireless electronic communication. In fact, your cellphone is actually a two way radio than a conventional phone.

Amateur Radio Operators (HAMs) are HF enthusiasts who still like the olden days where this type of communication was the only way to communicate long distance.

Its not meant for communication as you think, though many still use if in remote areas where there are no phones or cell towers.

Its not like we depend on this to talk to each other, its a great way in which we look for like minded people to chat with, almost like pen-pals for radio.

Bicycles were one of the first means of transportation, why do we still ride bicycles?

Canoes were one of the means of waterway transportation, why do we still buy and paddle in canoes.

Series 3 Land Rovers are decades old, why are we still spending so much money fixing them to drive them than getting a new vehicle?

Is for the same reasons we use HF radios still.

The other main reason why radios are still used for communication by so many emergency departments, boats etc., is that if or when cell phones and land line phones are down, radios will always still work.

According to one of the Amateur Radio regulations, if an emergency situation arises and first response teams are around your area, HAMS must surrender all of our radio gear and space for them to use. The reason being, it will still be the only choice when everything else fails.

Nice set up you have there, I always fancied an SDR system like that.
Last HF rig I had was the TS590. I do have an HW-101 which needs a big overhaul before it will work again, but just don't have the time, hence a small mobile rig might be on the cards :)

Almost! I have my foundation amateur radio exam tonight and I have a test-drive for the Defender 90 I'm thinking of buying tomorrow! So I'm very close :)
